The Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Statistics strives to reach their goal by continuing to provide resources to help improve the quality of the death data reported on Iowa death certificates.

Their intention is to raise the bar by assisting medical providers with reporting accurate death data information in a timely manner and have provided the following resources:

The on-line course “Reporting Cause of Deaths in Iowa" was developed especially for licensed medical providers and offers comprehensive guidance on completing the manner and cause of death sections of the certificate using Iowa's Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS). This on-line training will be a useful resource for new providers, as well as existing providers who just need a refresher. Participants have the option of reviewing the course and receiving a Certificate of Completion or logging in to review topics that interest them.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed two new resources. The first is a mobile application quick reference guide. This guide will assist medical providers with the completion of death certificates. The Cause of Death Mobile Application can be downloaded free of charge, to any mobile device. The second training opportunity is an online web-based training entitled “Improving Cause of Death Reporting” and offers providers continuing medical education credit.

If you have questions regarding one of the courses, please direct inquires to the point of contact(s) listed for each course.
