IOWA BOARD OF MEDICINE - TELECONFERENCE MEETING

The teleconference meeting was held in Conference room 526, 5th Floor of the Lucas Building, 321 East 12th St., Des Moines, IA, and public access to the meeting was provided at the location.

At 7:30 a.m. the meeting was called to order by Board Chair, Kyle Ulveling, M.D., roll call was taken and a quorum was established.
This teleconference is being held to consider the employment status of the Board's Executive Director, Mark Bowden.
Kyle Ulveling, M.D. informed the Board that Mark Bowden announced his retirement from the Iowa Board of Medicine, per his letter dated Friday, July 27, 2018.
Dr. Ulveling said he would like to thank Mr. Bowden for his ten years of service to the Iowa Board of Medicine, the improvements he made while in his position and mentioned that other Boards had recognized Mr. Bowden over the years for his leadership.
Dr. Ulveling went on to say there was no action required from the Board and asked if the Board members had any questions or additional comments.
KellyAnn Light-McGroary, M.D., Vice-Chair, and Ronald Kolegraff, M.D. said that they agree with Dr. Ulveling and share their appreciation for Mr. Bowden’s work at the Board of Medicine.
Jordan Esbrook, Assistant Attorney General, stated that at Mr. Bowden’s request, she would like to share a paper copy of his letter with those in attendance.
Dr. Ulveling told the Board that they would follow the normal agency directives for appointing an interim director and follow the normal statewide process for the hiring of a permanent director in the future.
Ms. Esbrook informed Dr. Ulveling that the media was present and wanted to ask some questions. Dr. Ulveling informed the media that questions should be directed to Polly Carver-Kimm, Communications Director at the Iowa Department of Public Health.
An unidentified female from the media asked if the public would be informed of why Mr. Bowden was put on administrative leave. Ms. Esbrook stated that she did not believe the information would be public and that Polly Carver-Kimm could clarify any of those questions.
At 7:34 a.m., all members present voted in favor of a motion by KellyAnn Light-McGroary, M.D., seconded by Brian Wilson, D.O., to adjourn the meeting.
This was a special teleconference regarding a personnel issue and was held at the Iowa Department of Public Health. A recording was provided to the Iowa Board of Medicine for transcription on November 5, 2019, following a request from the Office of the Auditor of the State. There were no staff members present from the Iowa Board of Medicine.
