There are several ways to verify the status of an Iowa physician's license.

Written Verification

To a State Licensing Board
Verification of a license to a U.S. licensing board or verification that requires a board seal or letter of good standing is $40 per request.  Each request will include verification of all licenses a physician has held in Iowa, e.g., resident and permanent licenses.

Verifications to U.S. medical and osteopathic licensing boards are processed using VeriDoc.  Go to www.veridoc.org to request  a  verification of your Iowa license to another licensing board.  You will pay by credit card and the verification will be sent immediately to the state medical or osteopathic board.

The Board will continue to verify manually those  requests to agencies outside the U.S.  For these, submit your request for verification in writing to the Board with the $40 fee. 

To Another Organization
Verification of a license that does not require a certified statement or letter is $15 per license.   Submit a written request indicating the license that needs to be verified, where the verification is to be sent, along with the appropriate fee. Mail the request to the Iowa Board of Medicine, 400 SW 8th Street, Suite C, Des Moines, IA 50309-4686. Make checks payable to the Iowa Board of Medicine.

 

Interactive Voice Recognition (IVR)

The IVR gives you the opportunity to access our database via telephone to verify physician, acupuncture, or resident licenses. The system is available 24 hours a day and is free other than the cost of the call. A caller can perform five verifications per call, and must know the social security number or license number to access the information. Please see the following instructions if you would like to utilize the IVR system.

Instructions:

• Call into the system by dialing 515-281-5171.
• To skip the introduction, dial the following sequence:
  • 1-1-1 if you know the license number
  • 1-1-2 if you know the social security number

Find a Physician

Find a Physician is a system that allows you to access the Board's database via the Internet. The information is accessible 24 hours a day, and is available by name only. Information on Find a Physician is updated daily and the service is free to everyone.

Instructions:

• Access the web-site by entering the following web-site address: www.medicalboard.iowa.gov
• Click on Find a Physician
• Enter in the last name or first 2 or 3 letters of the last name and click on "Start Query" button.
• Choose the physician that you wish to query from the group found, and click on the "Show Licensing Details" button.
• View licensee information
• Print (optional)
